Closing Night! Rooftop concludes with the sharpest shorts in the world, fired into the night sky one last time, the films fading like fireworks.

Time will pass you by, like a train whizzing through a station, allowing only fragmented glimpses of faces, or (paradoxically) like a train trudging so slowly you miss the events of your life altogether. As Rooftop’s 17th summer winds down, we reflect on children becoming grown-ups, adults becoming elderly, parents becoming memories, and memories becoming scattered. But along the way, we can celebrate the summer swimming holes we shared as children, the music of our parents wafting into our drifting attention, the ghostly (almost demonic) make-up mavens who surprisingly console our fragmented souls. This wide-range of wonderful short films wraps up our festival and whisks us into winter.

THE FILMS:

Timeless Seasons: Women's History (Ian Savage | 5’)
In honor of women's history week in Pheasant Crest, the 'Timeless Seasons' hosts are visited by a living legend: makeup mogul Raven Williams!

The Battle of the Jazz Guitarist (Mark Columbus | 8’)
A son’s tribute to his father (a once famous jazz guitarist from Fiji) goes awry when the son can't help but shed light on dark areas of their past. Humorous, inventive and emotional turns give insight into the two artists’ relationship and the crash of the American Dream.

The Song of the Mechanical Fish (Phillip Yuryev | 28')
In this drama as vast as novel by Tolstoy and as poignant as a story by Turgenev, an old fisherman who lives in a remote village in the Far North receives a letter inviting him to the wedding of his son whom he has never seen.

INTERMISSION

Gates of Life (Hannes Vartiainen, Pekka Veikkolainen | 6’)
Spectacular and strange brief moments of life stolen from passing-by strangers form a sequence of events hidden in plain sight.

Ziegenort (Tomasz Popakul | 19’)
For one teenager living in a small sea-side down, facing the challenges of growing up is especially severe, as he is different from all others: he is half boy, half fish.

The Hideout (Astrid Bussnik | 15') *
A tender and playful portrait of four boys, ages 11 and 12, growing up and growing apart.

* Rooftop alumni.
