Highlights from the vital Sundance 2013 selections include wild, weird and wonderful short films that define the genre, at the forefront of cutting edge storytelling.
On July 14, the Sundance Institute returns to BAM to host the ShortsLab, an all-day educational workshop. The Sundance-organized seminar of screenings and panels offer filmmakers insight and access into story development, production, and exhibition of narrative short-form storytelling. Rooftop has long been a champion of the short film as its own artistic medium, so to kick off the weekend, Rooftop is proud to co-present an evening of amazing shorts from Sundance’s acclaimed and diverse programming. Much like the emerging filmmakers represented, a coming-of-age theme prevails, as these films blossom into the world.

Seraph (Dash Shaw | 7’)
A boy’s childhood scars his life. This haunting animated music video, filled with obscure details and dreamlike theories, is part of Sigur Ros’ celebrated “Valtari Mystery Film Experiment.”
Magnesium (Sam de Jong | 21’)
A talented gymnast makes a life-changing discovery as she prepares for an important tournament, which is her last chance to reach the top.
INTERMISSION
#PostModem (Jillian Mayer & Lucas Leyva | 13’) *
This comedic, satirical, sci-fi pop musical tells the story of two Miami girls and how they deal with technological singularity, as told through a series of cinematic tweets.
Boneshaker (Frances Bodomo | 13’)
An African family, lost in America, travels to a Louisiana church to cure its problem child, played by the now legendary Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild).
Social Butterfly (Laura Wolkstein | 14’) *
When a 30-year-old American woman attends a teenage party in the south of France, guests wonder who she is and what she is doing there.
Oh Willy (Emma De Swaef, Marc James Roels | 15’)
Willy returns to his naturalist roots as he bungles his way into noble savagery.
