Outlandish animated creatures in outrageous situations.

Squiggles and blobs, fire bugs and snow golems, dignified kings and daring immigrants. The amazing thing about animation is that as silly as it can be, it can be just as somber; as weird as it is, it’s often just as real. These animations are in some way all absurd, because whether they’re about goofy fictional creatures or tragically documented true stories, these tales (and tones and tunes) are all equally affecting: unreal and enjoyable.

THE FILMS:

Wires.Under.Tension. – “Landscape Architecture” (St. John McKay Smith | 5’)
The Buddha and his son, Kurt Jr., fly through the brownness of space on a rescue mission, but perhaps humans cannot be saved from themselves. An animated music video for tonight’s band, created by the filmmaker and his toddler son.

Boogodobiegodongo (Peter Millard | 4’)
I once lived in a Boogodobiegodongo and I felt better.

and/or (Emily Hubley | 6’) *
An artist struggles to navigate the territory between despair and epiphany.

Move Mountain (Kirsten Lepore | 11’) *
A dangerous trek through animation paradise.

The Shrine (Sean Pecknold | 8’) *
An Argument. Fleet Foxes and fire gods.

Thank You (Pendelton Ward, Tom Herpich | 11’)
A snow golem is attacked in the forest by his species' mortal enemy, a pack of fire wolves, who accidentally leave a cub behind after their retreat. From the creator of Cartoon Network's “Adventure Time.”

INTERMISSION

Anomalies (Benjamin Cady | 15’)
A different type of animation invades a minimalist world, lightly mocking the human compulsion to meddle, probe and fiddle with things that are better left alone.

Not About Us (Michael Frei | 5’)
More games of contrasts: if we have a counterpart in a parallel world, can we meet and become entwined?

Crossover (Fabian Grodde | 6’)
One lone firebug is unable to follow a leader. When left behind, the stray discovers who is really pulling the strings.

Last Breath (Ying Ping Mak | 8’)
When breathing becomes unfashionable, how can one remain cool?

Sharaf (David Aronowitsch, Hanna Heilborn | 12’)
Sharaf was lucky: he survived. An informative and harrowing documentary about one of the thousands of refugees who risk their lives in rickety boats to immigrate to Europe.

Marcel, King of Tervuren (Tom Schroeder | 6’) *
Marcel survives the bird flu, sleeping pills and his son Max. Greek tragedy as acted out by Belgian roosters.

* Rooftop alumni.
